Maurici´s Zero v0.2187

So... here I am. I´ve sadly discovered this forum after finishing my build... I´m not sure is fair I introduce myself in the build subforum, as is already done... but Hey ho.

This is Maurici. Automotive design/development engineer, and a fully 3D printing nerd...

While I didn´t need a voron, as ALL my needs are plenty covered with a 400X400 bed slinger and a 220x220 also slinger, both custom build from Ender frames, that currently are Polycarbonate beasts (real stratasys polycarbonate... not the user friendly blends available out there)... Ok, then won´t go over 130mm/s but still good printers, I was in love with the Zero since I saw the project almost... 3 years ago?

So... last month decided to bite the bullet and try a budget-aliexpress special-cheap ass self sourced Zero...

Oh god. Why didn´t I do it sooner! what an ABSOLUTE joy has it been to build! I was expecting a long, difficult and frustrating experience after seeing some youtuber videos about parts not fitting ok, unclear instructions, people having to join livestreams in discord to understand the problems... and all was really straightforward and put toguether in a long day from 7.30am to 3am (till the first benchy actually finished) so take roughly 40 minutes of the first print and lunch... yeah, ok, nearly 20 hours. 4 of them fighting a bug in Klipper as I was pretty tired and missing obvious stuff...

indeed all the parts were printed prior in my other printers. If not is undoable.

Of course, as it won´t be my real workhorse, but more like a toy, I´ve decided to make the colours childish and toy-like...

Anyway. After my introduction, find some pictures and videos of the build!! (at the end... as always happens, It wasn´t that budget friendly, nor that cheap ass. Ended with LDO motors, posh-Ish rails, proper belts and so... and only skimmed out on the board, the Pi (that I already had) and the extrusion kit, that was cheap as peanuts, but surprisingly accurate, and the hot end, that is a chinesium special clone that works frikingly well to be fair...

As you can see in the pictures, I´ve gone for a very practical approach. Even in the cable management, while tidy, I´m not one to do "wiring porn" but to be practical. The thing has to be easy to service and mantain...

I´ve enjoyed it that much that I have it for sale already, to build another one. and when the second is build, I may do the same again. Is like a grown ups lego. What a MEGA design this thing is. Should i sell the slingers and build a 2.4?

oh. Excuse the RGB... I reused some fans from my old gaming station... and well. They had light... why not switch it on?

Welcome! Whilst not strict, we do always suggest that people should introduce themselves in the introductions section it just means that everyone gets to meet you without being distracted by the build. Good looking machine by the way - the LED fan is rather mesmerizing. I can't quite make out what the fan is for - is it additional part cooling?

It does become an addiction. One Voron is never enough. As for selling the slingers - that's a hard one if they are doing all you need them to then perhaps you shouldn't. Guess it all comes down to available space and just how much printing throughput you need. It's definitely always good to have more than one or two printers (especially of different footprints)

Cheers Smirk! I´ll pop over the intro section tomorrow morning as in my local time is rather late...

The fan is to move the air under the bed, so the bed "cools down" therefore the heating element keeps working...

If you have a half decently sealed chamber, what you get is a ver uniform "passive" heating of the chamber.

Did that with my workhorses as I´m not confortable with active heaters while I´m not in the workshop (despite I may use them to accelerate the initial heat up).

In the Zero, is pretty redundant really, as the chamber is pretty small, and the most technical material it will print will be ASA, but... done that to all my printers (not the RGB but the fan), the Zero could not be different!

*Edit. In the mods section, there is actually a similar approach to my idea so I see i´m not the only one trying to fit a big fan in an small chamber. Even chosen the same side.

Well. I now give the build as fully complete.

My super cheap re-used screen for my pi, needed to go trough HDMI... and my HDMI cables are too chunky. So found a workaround with FPV drone HDMI cables...

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B096JR37N4?ref=ppx_pt2_dt_b_prod_image

The whole screen situation is an absolute pitty, as I can´t leave a permanent connection to the accelerometre for the printing head, and I have to swap SD cards everytime I want to do the ADXL calibration, aside of using the same interface pins as the accelerometre for the touch controls, the drivers screw up the numpy drivers.. I will need to attack that at some point buying a propper 3.5" screnn, or just use one of my 7" piscreens that would be bigger than the buildplate... Dunno what to do while keep my heavily damaged budget under check...

Anyway. Is functional for now, and imput shaper calibrated... but could be a bit more practical. Any propper Klipper savy that could help?

I´m now printing a couple of nevermores for the cartesians and the voron....

I´m screwed. Now that I´ve discovered the propper open source comunity and stepped out my confort zone of building cartesians, I´ve descovered a whole new world of upgrades and ways to do things that will keep me entretained for a while and my unreasonable needs to upgrade the mini voron in check.

A great big welcome to my world. Ask anyone around here - I CANNOT resist a mod - good or not

I'm told there's myriad mods for the V0

Of course there are - why else would I go from this: (my first V0)

to this: (second V0)

to finally this: (Third V0)😟

Wow! this is the actual description of something that is gone Literally out of hands...

Honest Question tho... other than the engineering satisfaction.. (and nothing wrong about it), I do a lot of thing just because "I CAN"... is there any point moving to the 3 points belted system?

Looks like a V0, that got intimate with a trident, and got a belted salad fork on steroids... is it fixing an actual flaw? or is just coz you can and why the hell no?

Either way... they look friking amazing! congratulations.

No not really that much compared to a standard V0. Why did I do it - like you - because I CAN.

Benefits: Automatic Z_Tilt adjusting - No fiddling with getting the bed level with screws and springs. (To be honest - very seldom have to adjust the bed on the first V0)

Auto_Z calibration - perfect first layer every time once dialled in (Again can manually achieve this without the belted mod)

Speed: Can print much faster on a belt driven system than lead screw system. But I really don't need the speed advantage - more quality. All 3 Vorons printing at 100mms with 200mm/s travel speed. (Depends on who you listen to)

In summary: I just liked the challenge.

And then had an affair with a V2.4 🤣

I guess that is it

Yes, the TOP hat - drives my crazy on the V0 no 1, The extended and altered TOP Hat on V0 no2 has a door to access the toolhead, but still a pain. V0 no 3 has the 300mm extrusions, no TOP Hat and the panels are Zeropanels for easy removal. Easier to fit than magnetic panels - no VB tape involved. Easy to remove if needed to work on the printer.

As I print mostly ABS, the nevermore fan is essential. V0 no 1 has the V04 fan, the others the V05 micro duo

Now I like to see your mods - because YOU CAN

Amazing!

The nevermore micro duo v5 thingy is printing now in one of the slingers...

I loved seeing your pictures coz... I had the v0 for sale, just to buy another... but now... seeing yours... Why shouldn´t I just build another?

Belted trident salad fork v2.4 thingy coming next.

Is that a V0 mod? a full standalone BOM? can I have the name of this so i can investigate a bit?

It is a V0 mod

A combination of two main repositories:

Tripple belted: Tri-Zero

https://github.com/zruncho3d/tri-zero

and tall V0 - Boxzero:

https://github.com/zruncho3d/BoxZero

Other repositories used:

and if you want to go with the Zeropanels:

https://github.com/zruncho3d/ZeroPanels

and the kicky alternative:

https://github.com/zruncho3d/ZeroClick

BOMs are in the description (Readme) of the repositories. I used spare motors lying around. The only problem with the Z-belted mod is that you would need a second printer board to drive the Z-Motors if you do not want to go Octopus.
