Formbot V2.4r2 Kit Build - Kawasaki Green

Recommended Posts

Following my V0.2 build it didn't take too long to get the next Voron build going. I had a look at the Magic Phoenix kit, but decided to again go for a Formbot kit.

The kit comes with some nice extras like TAP, Nevermore hardware and an HDMI 5'' Touch Screen.

I am still undecided whether to go for a CAN upgrade from the start, or first get proof of up and running and then change.

The little V0.2 is doing all the parts printing. Color scheme as the title suggested is Extrudr ASA Neon Green as accent color. Everybode knows that Kawasaki Green goes faster!! 😇 Main color is Black with probably some details in Anthracite.

This build diary will not be as extensive as the V0.2, but I like this forum to drop some pictures and hopefully get some answers on questions I will likely have throughout the build. Probably because of the printing and not being in any hurry, I will enjoy the build and take my time, then again, once you started there is this eagerness to continue with the build.

The frame build was very straightforward with nice clean and straight extrusions in the kit.

The printer can wobble a bit standing on the desk, but I am pretty sure this is because of the desk standing somewhat skewed. All the corner to corner measurements of the frame are within 0,5mm.

Z-Motors and drives ready for assembly.

And the Z-idlers with Pins Mod. The BOM specifies 28mm for the Z-idlers. I purchased these 5mm diameter pins in various lengths from Aliexpress. The 30mm ones fit perfectly without sticking out, so I saw no reason to shorten them.

Besides CAN, pins and probably snap latches, are there any other mods that should be considered from the start?

Love the colour. 😍 Have you done Canbus before if not I'd get it set up first and then do the mod is my suggestion. I preferred these pin mods over the stock ones. I'd suggest Tap as well.

OK, please help me out here,...

This mod https://www.teamfdm.com/files/file/202-voron24-pins-mod/ is still online on the teamfdm site, however the link to the original repository is not available anymore. However from the same user, the updated pins mod https://www.teamfdm.com/files/file/460-voron24-trident-pins-mod/ is the one I linked to in my original post. So, this still should be the correct one to use?

Regarding the front idlers https://www.teamfdm.com/files/file/344-front-idlers/ they look great, so could go with these as well. Why do you like these better?

In the same style I also found BFI (Beefy Front Idlers) in a Github repository, but they are not linked on the teamfdm site. Any recommendations to go with the one over the (beefy) other front idlers?

Thanks for the Canbus recommendation. I have not done any Canbus, so probably safer bet to get the original configuration running and then change it over to Canbus.

Great job! I'm following right behind you with a MagicPheonix 2.4 kit

Great build diary of your Formbot V0.2. We started 10 days apart building it (at least looking at the initial post).

Will you do another build diary of your MagicPhoenix 2.4 kit? I haven't seen many posts or YouTubes on that kit, so it would be really helpful for others to read up on your experiences. Please keep me posted on your planned mods as well, looks like you nailed it in your V0.2 build preparation.

Can you also still share your updated filament runout sensor? When I uncommented it in the printer.cfg, I had many false positives and have not bothered yet to get it resolved, so commented out the runout sensor again.

What did you do for camera mount in the V0.2, or still a mod to be done?

Yes it is.

And I would use the Ramalama front Idlers which you have linked - they work great and is easier to route the belts

I tend to use the GitHub repositories for all my mods as the original author tends to update GitHub.

Same here, I go back to the Github repositories for my mods. I see that Ramalama archived all their mods repositories; from the comments on the readme it sounds like they are moving on and won't be making any updates. For the moment, they are fine to use but in the future hopefully someone will fork them and take up maintenance. All that said, the Ramalama pin idlers are really nice.

When I reprinted the filament sensor myself and used a low-force switch (Omron D2F-F), it resolved. This specific model uses half the force required to trigger. For my 2.4, I'll be using BTT Smart Filament Sensor 2.0 as it will also detect jams.

Camera - I used PanzerObserver: https://github.com/Slidr666/VoronUsers/tree/18599db8c29c9a272f852d1dac9ad5d014d0a496/printer_mods/Slidr/PanzerObserver2.4 mixed with a 1515 extrusion mount. For Voron 2.4 there is "Angrycam" which is very similar: https://github.com/VoronDesign/VoronUsers/tree/master/printer_mods/chri.kai.in/Angry_CAM_USB

  • 4 weeks later...

After some troubles with heater extruder errors on my V0.2 and resolving those with a heater wires bypass, I continued the Kawasaki Green build!

A and B Motors

20231110_203847(Small).jpg.e2e37bea090c7f6fea72ce73db40e081.jpg

Ramalama Idlers (ont the right) vs. Beefy Front Idlers (BFI) (on the left)

20231113_210421(Small).jpg.ebd58af9e8885ffcf52bf76df06b667c.jpg

The BFI's are much more straightforward to put together and have an easy fir of the carrier inside, where I had to do a little filing for the Ramalama Idlers

Z-Idlers (on the left) vs. Beefy Z-Idlers (BZI) (on the right)

And the four Angry Birds together

And this is the status quo with the gantry in and all belts connected.

Meanwhile the shipment of yellow ducks came in, meaning that when I have printed all the V2.4 parts I will redo the electronics of the V0.2 with proper DIN rail, Manta M4P and EBB36 CANbus and 3.5TFT screen. This should give me enough confidence and practice to go for SB2209 CAN v1.0 (RP2040) on the V2.4 from the start. I will also start with the standard supplied OMRON probe and Z-endstop.

Next-up are Electronics and Stealthburner!

I like the look of those beefy idlers. Mmmhhh.

The Ramalama idlers has also been archived - meaning no more development on those?

Time to switch?

This is my 2nd Formbot build after a V0.2 before this one. I cannot complain at all about the quality of the kit and think it is rather good. That you have to replace a cheaper fan is what you can expect. Quality of extrusions and other parts like power supply and gears are all very good. I ordered the printed parts for the V0.2 and am printing my own for the V2.4. Also no complaints about the printed parts.

So, yes would recommend the kit. Don't expect additional documentation with the kit. This might be better with an LDO kit, but the Voron documentation is very good and the little changes with the kits should be very doable without specific Formbot documentation.

I was doubting to go for the Magix Phoenix kit with the V2.4, but went for the Formbot kit because of the good experience with the V0.2 kit.

I don't think you can go wrong with any of the kit manufacturers now?

Okey.

Good to know.

I have previously built a LDO Voron 0.1 and thats a really good kit.

But the price difference between a ldo and formbot 2.4 is really significant at least here in europe so the formbot is a lot more interesting!

Thanks for the reply!

I do not want to hijack the thread, but I did get mine on AliExpress (Last june). A Fysetc kit. The kit is different from the LDO or Formbot kits. Actually the BOM looks very much like the official Vorondesign BOM. It is a very beginner / amateur friendly kit. No crimping needed, and very clear instructions when things are not according to the official manual. Only thing is, the kit has the older afterburner. I did upgrade to a stealthburner with tap, during which process I did cause a shortcircuit and burnt the Fysetc MCU. I contacted the sellers on AliExpress and they simply sent me a new one.

I just looked at the price on aliexpress, and the price is now 760 euros including shipping (from French warehouse to Holland, 350mm), so no additional costs. It was delivered within 5 days after ordering.  If interested, I can post the shoplink.

I just also looked at the Formbot site. It costs a bit more(100-150 euros), but it includes all the newest good things. Like a big screen, tap, well-known motors, chamber-illumination, filament runout detector... all the small things that also can be bought separately, but absolutely worth having in one package for only 100 euros more? definitely worth it 🙂
