Millennium Machine Milo Mill - Fusion 360 Tool Library - Ends Mill and Operating Settings

Disclaimer: Please use this information at your own risk! The mill spins at high RPMs, and it is recommended that the mill be installed inside an enclosure such as a Casa enclosure to minimize potential damage or injury should a failure occur. I do my best to post accurate information.

Millennium Machine Milo V1.5 Mill is a relatively new and not much information is available for this mill. The purpose of this post is to provide information for the Fusion 360 tool library and end mills for new users like me.

The LDO Milo kit does come with a LDO CNC Starter Kit, which contains the items shown in the photo below:

Before getting into the end mill settings, here is some useful additional information for you.

Milo Z's column lacks the stiffest as your commercial mills. The workaround for this is operating the mill at a proper feed rate per tooth. Ideally, the setting should be 0.05. This can be accomplished by adjusting the Spindle Speed and the Cutting feedrate. Please take this info for what it's worth, I'm new to milling, and I know there's a lot more to this than I presently know, but I'm posting the settings that I've set and worked for me.

You can see below that changing the Spindle Speed and the Cutting Feed, the Feed per Tooth is increased.

Another important setting in the "Manufacture" section setup of Fusion 360 is that when using 2D Adaptive Clearing is necessary to set the "Optimal Load" at 10% of the tool diameter. In the example below, it's set for a 6mm end mill.

It's recommended that a proper tool holder be used in the tool library to avoid possible collision when milling a part. Here is the link I used to import my ER20A collet into Fusion 360. Keep in mind that I've installed a 2.2 kW water-cooled spindle on my mill, but the LDO comes with a 1.5 kW spindle, which uses an ER16 collet.

The end mill info variables are the type of end mills, the flute numbers, the flute lengths, the end mill lengths and the diameter of the end mill. I'll provide a link if you're interested in purchasing that particular end mill.

In the interest of keeping the library organized, I've numbered the end mill as follows:

  • 1-29 Regular End Mills (sorted by size)
  • 30-39 Drills (sorted by size)
  • 40-45 Threadmills
  • 47 Drag Engraver
  • 48-50 Double Angle Chamfer
  • 51 Touch Probe

For anyone looking to get into CNC milling, it's not a cheap hobby; the cost of aluminum stock and end mills can quickly add up. You can very easily spend $100+ on Aliexpress on end mills. Luckily, we have good suppliers of end mills on Ali. The ones I've bought from are Dreanique,Waltetap, BB and Chowmaster.

This end mill holder stocks 60 end mills, and it's filling up.

Sorry it's been a while since I have posted.  I finally started working with my Milo Mill and decided to make the aluminum clamps for the fixated plate.

I was successful with the first 2 setups, but I didn't attempt the third (the chamfer operation on the top of the clamp).  I wasn't sure how to set this up.  I do not have the probe, only the tool setter.

The first and second setup went pretty well except the part was not centered in the stock (my stock was X 70mm Y 20mm and Z 16mm).  The part was located in the front left portion of the raw material.  So, when the machining started, it really hogged out a lot of material on the back and right-hand side of the stock.

In the MilenniumOS, I wasn't sure how to probe the workpiece, so I cancelled the operation.

I used the datum tool that was in the machine to set XY at the front left corner of the stock (I touched off left side of part and set X, front side and set Y.  I then touched off of the top with a piece of paper to set Z.

Nice to see you posting again!

Do you have plans to get a probe? The 85.00 for the probe is money well spent and make setup a lot easier. The part off-center could be because of backlash. I'd suggest that you set up the long side be held in the vice so when you do the flip, it is held securely on the longside.

For chamfering, I used Coutour and pick the lower line of the chamfer same applies for chamfering a hole.

Thanks for the reply, I don't think that it's a backlash issue.  The machine is very repeatable when traveling from the homing position to the tool setter and to the position I set at zero.  I think the problem is that my zeroing of the machine is not accounting for the radius of the 6mm datum tool.  

I am seriously looking at a probe; in the meantime, I am going to try to move the X and Y 3mm off the front left corner and zero.  I'll let you know!

That was it!  I didn’t account for the 3mm radius of the Datum. I made a goofy looking tool on my printer to touch off X and Y which actually worked well. I snapped a couple of these tools off, but I printed several.  However, I have a touch probe on order!
