Octopus 1.1 successfully flashed but can't find serial/by id. This is my first print build (micron 180) no canbus

Have you stopped the klipper service before trying to get the serial?

sudo service klipper stop

then do a 

ls /dev/serial/by-id

Yes, done that - multiple times. 

And I haven't forgotten the sneaky double click of the reset button.
