Raspberry PI 5 with Cooler / Cooling Fan

polygonprint

Question

Hi All,

I recently swapped over to a Raspberry PI 5 from a PI 3B+ on my Voron Trident. Everything is up and running well. I purchased the PI 5 Active Cooler with the PI 5 and would like to have the fan on the cooler running all of the time when the printer is on. Currently it spins up briefly when the printer is booting up but then switches off. I'm still a bit of a newbie when it comes to setting up hardware, macros, etc.

Is there a way to have the fan on the PI run when the printer is on? How would I set that up in the printer.cfg ?

Temp's on the PI get up to the 40+ deg range when the printer is idle, however when the electronic housing fans kick in during printing the temp's are much lower on the PI. I probably don't need the cooler on the PI but think it would be nice to have it operational for the extra cooling when the printer is idle.

Thanks!

Change your pin, power(s), and temp accordingly to how you want it. This allows my fan to run all the time, since my target_temp is 1. Set it to that if you want it running non-stop. I do, as it is a small fan, quiet, and a little piece of mind. You can hide it with _ prepended (_PiFan). I like to see it so I know it's running.

I use the same for the bay electric bay (hidden), with a 25% speed to have the blowing constantly. My MCU is always ~10C above ambient this way. Used to get overheating like crazy on my little guys. Never shut down, but the messages were concerning!

[temperature_fan PiFan]
pin: PF9
max_power: 1.0
kick_start_time: 0.5
sensor_type: temperature_host
min_temp: 0
max_temp: 70
control: watermark
target_temp: 1
shutdown_speed: 0.0
