Filamentalist - Spool Rewinder

Recommended Posts

Been looking for a good spool rewinder to use with the tradrack mounted on the Trident. Thanks to @PFarm, I took a liking to the Filamentalist Spool Rewinder. Tried quite a few and was not really happy with the solution I mounted on the Trident (Stern Wheeler Filament buffer). Though it did not take up much space, it did not offer a flawless experience.

I also thought of the  Universal Auto Rewind spool holder by Vincent Groenhuis, as posted by @Buurman, but had an awful lot of trouble printing the springs to my satisfaction. Gave up on that one (heaps of parts in a tub, minus the springs).

So, filamentalsit seemed like a good idea, especially after watching the device in action:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4iaSJrHc7k4

 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W6pqgNZXvYI

Instructions on the GitHub page are comprehensive but I still found it confusing at times, and some steps that seemed obvious were omitted, like putting the rubber bands on the large pulleys.

I wasn't to concerned about colour, so used some left over filament, therefore the colour variation in the printed parts.

Here is the build in pictures.

1. Tensioner Mount assembly:

2. Drive Roller assembly:

Remember to fit the rubber bands to the rollers.

Spot the mistake! - Forgot to add the spacers either side of the roller with the o-rings. Fixed that.

3. Base Assembly:

(Too much squish on the left pillar - see the wavey pattern)

4. Finished Product:

And... it works! Even with these new cardboard spools - I do not like cardboard spools - just saying.

These will be installed on 2020 extrusion, mounted on top of the Trident. Thus, it will hide the tradrack at the back

Another enjoyable and easy build.

Yes, when I looked at your photo I thought you used metal spacers instead of the printed ones, closer look I noticed they weren't there.

Here is a tip for anyone assembling one of these. Make sure you seat the ECAS completely in its place.

IMG_2212.thumb.JPG.b3455b68e22e4e025ef0a381c00b44b8.JPG

Try and push in evenly using the insert tool for the 8mm shaft and a pair of pliers. Inserting the ECAS improperly will crack the Tensioner Mount and the ECAS will not hold properly in place (ask me how I know 🙂)

Got them installed on the 2020

Thanks for sharing your experiences,

I have been looking at the Filamentalist for a while now, due to space constraints a buffer was going to be difficult, and this would be perfect for my 'future' set up! there appears to be quire a few people know who have had some great success with it, i need to order some parts for a printer build so i will order the Filamentalist parts also (shame no AliExpress links, being in the UK i cannot use the Amazon links, however a lot of items do come up on Amazon when copying the descriptions.

Please continue to share your experiences as you use it and of course set up with Happy Hare, which is something i am not looking forward to!!

Thanks

Managed to finally find some rubber bands - for those who want to use an AliExpress Link, these are the ones i have ordered - not as wide, but may double up with a squeeze (or slight trim)

AliExpress - 20x Heavy Duty Rubber Bands Strong 3 1/2" x 1/2" for Outdoor Hiking Depot

That should work mine were 3/4" wide as long as you push the rubber band toward the outside edge of the roller that's where the filament reel makes contact.

Thanks or the info, i just could not find 3/4" wide bands any where!

All the parts i don't already have in a stash somewhere have been ordered, next to go on a printing marathon! i will be looking at setting up 12 of these! i think may be in a row of 7 and then 5 in front staggered to allow the PTFE through from the rear ones..

I have absolutely no idea what im doing, but down the hole i goooooo!!

At least i now know i don't need to build up the ERCT

@Graymattor What size of printer do you have? Six of these do fit across a 350 printer. Maybe an option if mount a set of rewinders at one level and use these mounts for another set?

It's actually going in the top of a purpose built enclosure which is 600mm wide x 800mm deep... but need to fit 12 spools and the ERCF in there and allow enough room for the reverse bowden in to the printer compartment below...

Thank you.... When I start wiring, happy hare and integration that's when I'll hit a wall! I'll be using the MMB but currently I don't have a CAN printer (I have a klipperised CR-10 smart pro and I'm most of the way through building VZ330, i need to get both running CAN)..

Hello there.  I just wanted to ask if you're still using these and if you're happy with them thus far?  Any hiccups you've noticed?  I too am looking to build a few of these for a Tradrack. Just ordered the BOM parts from Amazon.  Thanks in advance.

Yes - they have been working without an issue

Hi, I am the creator of the Filamentalist.  There is actually very little that can go wrong with these.  The most common issues are reversed installation of the 1-way bearing and not leaving enough space so that the center drive spacers can't free float.  There is a lot of material and people to help!

Refer to the FAQ (https://github.com/Enraged-Rabbit-Community/ERCF_v2/blob/rc2/Recommended_Options/Filamentalist_Rewinder/Filamentalist_FAQ.md), Troubleshooting Guide (https://github.com/Enraged-Rabbit-Community/ERCF_v2/blob/rc2/Recommended_Options/Filamentalist_Rewinder/troubleshoot.md), or the Filamentalist Discord group here: (https://discord.gg/uDcGxukRKd)

Yet...my question goes unaddressed.

Can you give us a little more info on your setup? Are you using the Voron ERCF or the TradRack what sensor (microswitches) have you installed? What firmware are you using? @mvdveer is a great member who has set up both ERCF and TradRack. My only experience to this point is with the TradRack and I am still working on the setup, other projects have pulled me away to complete it.

I have not responded, as I have no tips - I just followed the various documentation and videos out there. I do believe the inventor of filamentalist , @SkiBikeMake  is a member of this forum and has responded to your question on July 23 with some links and the like.
