Looking for information BEFORE I start down the ERCF road

Recommended Posts

First my printer. I have a selfsourced Voron 2.4. 350mm . Stealthburner , Chaotic Labs cnc tap , Galileo2,  BTT EBB SB2209 (rp2040), KNOMI 2, and a mosquito hotend.

Now my question,

I'm looking into the ERCF v3 . The question i have is about the runout sensors and filametrix filament cutter . Which from what ive read are recommended.  Can I use the Galileo2  with it? Or am I going to have to go back to clockwork 2. I've seen the mods for the CW2 for the sensors and cutter. But I can't seem to find anything for Galileo2.now its possible im an idiot and just missed it. It's happened. And the bottom of the stealthburner for the mosquito is that modified for the setup? I've seen some stls for the rapido hotend and a few others  that looked like it was changed. Just looked at the stl files so I could be wrong about that.  Am I going to have to change my hot end? Only reason I used the mosquito was i had it from a rat rig I built and didn't want to stick a 100 dollar hot end on the shelf .

Can someone point me in the right direction? Advice ?

Yes you can. I have my two Voron 2.4's (with Boxturtles) with Galileo 2 extruders and filametric cutter with dual sensors.

Here are some links to the files:

I assume it would have to be, in order to accept the blade attachment and a slot where the blade operates.

I have found two mods for it on printables:

I have this combo working with Happy Hare on my 4 lane PicoMMU.  The housing with the two switches for the G2E that replaces your CW2 housing, needs to be fairly tight tolerances.  Mine were a little sloppy when I first printed it so I had to superglue the switch in without the screw screws so it would not drop out and pause during a print. It’s only been the top switch I’ve had problems with.  Since I super glued it,  it’s been pretty flawless though, and I just haven’t found the time (six months )to reprint it lol.

I built an ERCF v1.1 a few years ago but never got in production. It worked but not consistently. Those days one of the main problems was the storage of the rewinded filament. ERCF does not actively rewind the filament so you have to create filament buffers for every lane!

I do not know how the latest version is but if I was going to revisit the MMU “rabbit hole” I will go with the ArmoredTurtle today. The design is more elegant!

Personally, I am waiting for the Bondtech INDX to get ... debugged!

Yep - watch out for Rabbit holes, built 3 ERCF's - limited use - unreliable. Build two tradracks, more reliable but still a lot of user intervention, Built an openAMS - canned that one!. Build 2 X Armoured Turtle Boxturtles and haven't looked back. Used the filamentalist spool rewinders for the tradracks - great system.

You will be happy with the Armored Turtle (BoxTurtle)

There has been quite a significant development cycle in toolhead cutters lately.

I'm running the LDO Jabberwocky, I have a filamatrix built but not on a printer and have a close-to-finished A4T with crossbow cnc cutter for my Trident.

The Jabberwocky has been faultless so far for me (400 hours usage on the MMU, 200 hours pre-mmu) and others using the A4T toolhead with the crossbow are also running into the thousands of cuts.

Whatever you get, if you run Happy Hare, then elect for the two sensor option for pre and post extruder (hotend) sensors. Post extruder is the most important for Happy Hare.

Filamatrex is a reprint of the extruder and hotend mount but you get to reuse all of your hardware. A4T will require a new bondtech RIDGA gear for the recommended wwbmg extruder or you can reuse your G2 gears if you are happy with a little more weight up top. You will also require a new toolhead board as the SB-orientated boards don't fit. Crossbow cnc cutter has had good reviews.

I use another type two mmu called EMU - currently being converted from 4 to 5 lanes. This runs on a more modular basis using cheap EBB36 / EBB42 boards and packaged within a filamentalist rewinder. A couple of pictures below.

Addition to above: This is my second unit for my Trident - another 5. Gives you an idea of how it is built up. If anyone wants a build log I can throw one up. It is quite a nice unit to build and use.

For ERCF V3 - work out how many colours you want online and how much space you have for X number of rewinders and work out if you want a full blown type one setup or a more compact type two.

I agree with mvdveerI also build the ERCF and had issues with it, just to much going on that has to sync up for it to work properly. I'm currently building a BoxTurtle from the LDO kit and the system is just that much less complicated (it is a KISS design). I'm using the FilamATrix mod for the Galileo2Extruder.
